MY SOUTH: I went to Java Monkey for the first night of the My South contest sponsored by Turner South. The place was packed and two of my faves -- Ayodele and Lady -- were picked as two of the four finalists. I am going to read my creation on Thursday night. Judges will pick four more finalists Thursday and then the eight will feature at JM on Sunday night where a winner will be named. The prize is $500 and you reading your work as a commercial on Turner South. I thought this contest was going to be pure cheesy, sell out hell, but the people reading tonight weren't scared to be controversial and up front about the problems we still have in the modern south. I'm not going to censor myself either. They will like it or they won't.

ART PARTY REPORT: The Studio 1030-G Art Party on Saturday was so much fun. The space was great and the artists were wonderful. Mayor Shirley Franklin even stopped by to check it all out. I read, sold some copies of Better To Travel and enjoyed chatting with everyone. Many thanks to my fellow poets Anne Bucey, Lisa Allender and Jessica Hand, as well as artist Karen Weyandt for her support.

OPEN MIC FRIDAY: The Georgia Poetry Society Open Mic will be Friday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. with features Cleo Creech, Anne Bucey and Louise Runyon. Three great poets! Don't miss it. Visit www.georgiapoetrysociety.com for details.
